DIGICEL SUPPORTS REACH ONE TEACH ONE BASKETBALL CAMP
BASSETERRE – ST. KITTS (JULY 27TH, 2010) – Eager and excited children gathered today with several officials on the Birdrock basketball court for the official opening of the Reach One Teach One Basketball Camp sponsored by Digicel.
The camp was established with an aim to develop basketball skills amongst the youth in the Federation, and boost their confidence and overall fitness. Through this program several local basketball players have received basketball scholarships to universities in the United States.
This year’s young registered participants will go through a week-long training camp under the wings of Coach Spezia, President of the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association and Coach Dee Davis, former WNBA player. Both coaches while addressing the ceremony’s attendees, praised the program for its continued invaluable contribution to developing the sport of basketball in St. Kitts & Nevis, and stressed on the many long term benefits to be reaped out of such a camp.
Also present at the opening to impart their blessings on the program were The Honorable Minister of Sports, Mr. Glen Phillip, Director of Sports, Mr. Dave Connor, and Marketing Manager for Digicel St. Kitts & Nevis. Representing one of the official sponsors of the camp, Ms. Laws enthusiastically commented:
“We are delighted to be involved with Reach One Teach One for yet another year. We, at Digicel, take such great pride in lending out a hand in the community. One of the reasons we particularly like this program is simply because it teaches the aspiring youth skills and it also gives them hope. Once you have hope, the world is your oyster, and you can do anything you want in life because you have the ability, the opportunity and the freedom to choose.”
Ms. Laws went on to commend the organizers of the program for their hard work and consistency and for always actively seeking ways to make it better from year to year. In staying true to Digicel’s tagline, ‘The Bigger, Better Network’, the communicated intention of the managing committee is to expand the program so that it reaches more and more athletes, not only locally, but also regionally. And with a scoring shot to the basketball hoop, Minister Phillip declared the Camp open.
