DIGICEL NEVIS MASTERS PARISH CRICKET LEAGUE BOWLS OFF

November 14th 2010 - DIGICEL NEVIS CRICKET MASTERS PARISH LEAGUE BOWLS OFF

BASSETERRE – ST. KITTS (NOVEMBER 14th, 2010) – The 2010 Masters Parish League, sponsored in part by The Bigger, Better Network, got off to an impressive start with a brief opening ceremony at the Elquemedo Willet Park.

The proceedings were chaired by Chief Organizer, Curtis Morton, who after delivering a prayer, sought very early to air on the tournament. Morton indicated that the league was conceived out of the general growing feeling that the senior cricketers of Nevis wanted the opportunity to play more cricket. The tournament was therefore designed as a new form of recreation for them to fulfill their desire to participate in the sport, and engage in friendly inter-community competition.

Digicel Marketing Executive, Genieve Hanley, represented The Bigger, Better Network with warm remarks. She expressed that Digicel was very happy to be a partner in The Nevis Masters League as the Network continues to focus on giving back to communities, especially with endeavors that would enhance participants’ health and camaraderie. Genieve went on to extend her well wishes to all the cricketers who would be involved, and also enticed them by noting that Digicel will be donating two handsets as tournament prizes—one to the batsman with the most runs, and the other to the bowler with the most wickets.

A representative of Nevis Multi-Line Services, another sponsor of the League, also conveyed her delight to be affiliated with such an initiative. President of the Nevis Cricket Association, Ronald Powell, also addressed the gathering. He admonished the players to enjoy the matches but set examples for the younger players to follow.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Mr. Alsted Pemberton was high in praise for the main organizer of the tournament for his efforts and noted that it was yet another avenue for the seniors to showcase their talents. He then officially declared the league open.

Immediately after the opening ceremony, The Dango Farrell St. Kitts Masters Team engaged their Nevisian counterparts in a tournament opener. It turned out to be a very crowd-pleasing game. Nevis Masters scored 121 for 3 in 15 overs, and St. Kitts did 11 for 7 from 15 overs. The league matches will officially commence on Thursday 18th November at 5pm.
